WHISTLER, BC — As 2025 draws to a close, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is preparing for a week of high-energy celebrations, significant infrastructure shifts, and holiday service adjustments. From the return of the beloved Wintersphere to critical water quality improvements in South Whistler, here is everything residents and visitors need to know for the week of December 29.
Ring in 2026: New Year’s Eve Highlights
Whistler is set to transform into a vibrant, alcohol-free celebration zone this December 31. Designed for all ages, the festivities invite the community to connect under the mountain stars.
The Main Event: Fire & Ice
The legendary Fire & Ice Show returns for a special New Year’s Eve edition at Skier’s Plaza. Spectators can watch world-class freestyle skiers and riders flip through burning rings of fire to the beat of live music and pyrotechnics. The show kicks off at 8:30 p.m., culminating in a first-class fireworks display at 9:00 p.m.
Free Festive Fun
- Wintersphere: Located at the Whistler Conference Centre, this indoor winter wonderland offers free festive activities, a signature holiday maze, and entertainers. It remains open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until January 3 (closed Dec. 25).
- Whistler Olympic Plaza: The outdoor skating rink is open daily starting at 11 a.m. On New Year’s Eve, look for the “Glitter Skate” featuring disco-style characters and music.
- Luminosity Parade: A glowing, all-ages procession winding through the Village, leading participants toward the grand finale at Skier’s Plaza.
Getting Around: Transit and Parking
To ensure everyone celebrates responsibly, the RMOW is providing free local transit all day on Wednesday, December 31, extending until the end of service.
Winter Parking Regulations
Winter parking rules remain strictly in effect to facilitate snow clearing. Key regulations include:
- No Even Side Parking: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding holidays).
- No Odd Side Parking: Prohibited at all times year-round.
- No Overnight Surface Parking: Vehicles must not be parked overnight in Day Lots 1–5 or any other surface lots to allow for plow access.
Infrastructure & Utilities: January 2026 Changes
As the calendar turns, several essential service changes will take effect.
South Whistler Water Quality Improvements
Starting in January 2026, the RMOW will begin adjusting the pH levels of the water supply in South Whistler (including Function Junction, Cheakamus Crossing, and Creekside). This upgrade aims to meet Health Canada’s updated guidelines and protect household plumbing from corrosion.
Note for Businesses: Facilities such as breweries, bakeries, and laundries should prepare to calibrate equipment for the slight change in alkalinity.
Waste Management Adjustments
New tipping fee rates at the Waste Transfer Station will go into effect on Thursday, January 1. Residents are encouraged to check the municipal website for updated pricing.
Christmas Tree Disposal
For those ready to part with their holiday greenery, free drop-off locations are available at the Nesters and Function Junction waste depots from December 26 to January 11. Ensure all tinsel, lights, and ornaments are removed.
Municipal Services Holiday Hours
Expect significant closures and reduced hours for municipal facilities during the holiday week:
