Kankakee Tornado Trajectory: Two Dead in Indiana as Severe Weather Outbreak Ravages Central U.S.

LAKE VILLAGE, IN — A violent early-spring weather system tore through the heart of the Midwest on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, leaving a trail of destruction that stretches from the plains of Texas to the rural borderlands of Illinois and Indiana. As of Wednesday afternoon, officials have confirmed at least two fatalities and dozens of injuries following a direct hit by a massive supercell that spawned the devastating Kankakee tornado and its subsequent path into Newton County, Indiana.

The storm, which meteorologists described as a “long-track supercell,” demonstrated the terrifying power of “agentic” weather patterns—systems that maintain their structure for hundreds of miles. While the Kankakee tornado caused significant structural damage in Illinois, it was the storm’s progression into Lake Village, Indiana, that turned a property disaster into a human tragedy.

Tragedy in Lake Village: “Total Devastation”

The Newton County Coroner’s Office confirmed that an elderly man and an elderly woman lost their lives when a tornado, which had previously ripped through the Kankakee area, crossed the state line and slammed into the rural community of Lake Village.

Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran, standing before the splintered remains of a residential home, described the scene as one of the worst the county has ever witnessed.

“Right before 7 p.m. Tuesday, a large tornado hit our community, and it hit us hard,” said Lori Postma, spokesperson for the Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department. “When we first got on the scene, we found houses collapsed, people trapped in basements, and livestock running loose through the debris.”

The “total devastation” reported by first responders has led to a strict lockdown of the area. Sheriff Cothran issued a stern warning to the public: “Please do not come here. Do not try to help yet. We need the roads clear for emergency services to reach those still unaccounted for.”

The Kankakee Tornado: A Path of Destruction

Before the storm claimed lives in Indiana, it took aim at Kankakee, Illinois. The Kankakee tornado tore through the city’s residential and commercial districts, damaging several high-occupancy buildings and residential blocks.

Kankakee’s mayor confirmed that while several residents were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from lacerations to broken bones, there were miraculously no fatalities within the city limits. Images from the scene showed a Family Dollar store reduced to a skeleton of twisted metal and piles of rubble, with employees emerging from the wreckage in shock.

The Kankakee tornado was part of a larger cluster of at least 10 reported tornadoes that touched down across Texas, Illinois, and Indiana over a 12-hour window.

Record-Breaking “Monster” Hail

While the tornadoes dominated the headlines, the broader storm system produced “monster” hail that shattered state records. In parts of Illinois, residents reported hail the size of softballs.

One particular stone, measured at 6 inches in diameter—roughly twice the size of a baseball—is currently being reviewed by the National Weather Service (NWS). If verified, this would set a new state record for the largest hailstone in Illinois history. The ice projectiles were heavy enough to crush car windshields and punch holes through the roofs of mobile homes.

Tornado Emergencies and Ongoing Threats

The severity of the system prompted the NWS to issue a Tornado Emergency for Knox, Indiana, and Starke County—the most urgent warning level available, reserved for confirmed, large, and extremely dangerous tornadoes moving into populated areas.

While Starke County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Wayne James reported that several homes were destroyed, the timely “Tornado Emergency” alert likely saved lives, as no fatalities were reported in that sector despite the intensity of the strike.

The Forecast: 90 Million People at Risk

The threat is far from over. As of Wednesday morning:

  • Severe Weather Corridor: Over 90 million people from the Gulf Coast to the Mid-Atlantic are under a severe weather threat today.
  • Secondary Burst: Meteorologists warn that the storm system will receive a “new burst of energy” this afternoon as it moves into Kentucky, Ohio, and eventually the East Coast.
  • Tornado Watches: New watches have been issued south of Tuesday night’s impact zone, covering parts of Southern Indiana and Ohio.
