The Tri-State area is waking up to a transformed landscape this Monday morning as the full scope of Winter Storm Fern becomes clear. After a weekend of relentless snowfall that stretched over 2,000 miles across the United States, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are now buried under some of the most significant snow totals seen in years.

From the canyons of Manhattan to the quiet suburbs of Fairfield County, the “Big Dig” has officially begun. While the bulk of the moisture has moved out to sea, the National Weather Service (NWS) is still refining preliminary totals that show many areas shattered daily records, including a historic 11.4-inch measurement in Central Park.

What to Expect Next

While the snow has stopped, the danger hasn’t passed. Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have urged residents to stay off the roads as crews continue to clear secondary streets.

“This Arctic siege is brutal and life-threatening,” Gov. Hochul stated. “We are looking at the longest cold stretch this state has seen in years.”

With temperatures expected to remain well below freezing until February 3, any snow left on the ground will likely remain for the next week.
