Eric Dane, Grey Anatomy and Euphoria’ Star Dies at 53 After Courageous ALS BattleEric Dane, Grey Anatomy and Euphoria’ Star Dies at 53 After Courageous ALS Battle

Eric Dane, the charismatic actor who won over millions of fans as the suave Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and later captivated audiences as the complex Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, has passed away. He was 53.

Dane died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, following a nearly year-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

A Final Chapter of Advocacy

Dane first publicly revealed his diagnosis in April 2025, after noticing early symptoms like weakness in his right hand late in 2023. Despite the progressive nature of the neurodegenerative disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Dane spent his final 10 months as a tireless advocate for ALS research and awareness.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said. “Throughout his journey, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.”

In his final days, he was surrounded by his devoted wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

From Water Polo to Hollywood Stardom

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane’s path to acting was accidental. A high school water polo player, he only tried out for a theater production of All My Sons because his athletic season had ended early. That performance sparked a lifelong passion that led him to Los Angeles.

Before his breakout role on Grey’s Anatomy in 2006, Dane built a steady career with roles on:

  • Saved by the Bell
  • Charmed
  • Gideon’s Crossing
  • X-Men: The Last Stand

An Enduring Legacy

Dane’s impact on television was profound. As Dr. Mark Sloan, he became a cultural icon, evolving from a “bad boy” surgeon into a beloved father figure over six seasons. In recent years, he showcased his range in Euphoria, delivering a haunting performance as a man struggling with a double life.

Even as his health declined, Dane remained committed to his craft. He filmed scenes for the upcoming third season of Euphoria in a wheelchair, telling reporters in 2025, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working.”
