NEW YORK — December 18, 2025 — Hollywood icon and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher appeared on Good Morning America (GMA) today to give fans an inside look at one of the year’s most anticipated films: Marty Supreme. Starring opposite Timothée Chalamet, Drescher discussed her pivotal role in the A24 sports drama that has taken the film festival circuit by storm and is poised to be a Christmas Day blockbuster.

From “The Nanny” to the World of 1950s Ping Pong

Known globally for her legendary role in The Nanny, Fran Drescher takes on a different kind of matriarchal character in Marty Supreme. She plays Rebecca Mauser, the mother of the titular character, Marty Mauser (Chalamet). During her GMA interview, Drescher described the experience of working with director Josh Safdie as “propulsive and electrifying,” noting that the film’s unique 1950s setting provides a vibrant backdrop for a deeply personal family story.

“Working with Timothée was a revelation,” Drescher shared. “He has this incredible intensity, but in the scenes between Marty and his mother, we really found the heart of the movie amidst all the ping pong chaos.”

What is ‘Marty Supreme’ About?

Directed by Josh Safdie in his first solo feature since the Safdie brothers’ split, Marty Supreme is loosely inspired by the life of real-life table tennis legend Marty Reisman. The film follows Marty Mauser, a young man from New York City with an obsessive dream of becoming the world’s greatest ping pong champion.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Cast

Drescher is joined by an eclectic and high-profile cast that has made Marty Supreme a major talking point in the industry:

  • Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow as Kay Stone, a socialite who befriends Marty.
  • Fran Drescher as Rebecca Mauser.
  • Kevin O’Leary (of Shark Tank fame) in a standout role as a businessman.
  • Tyler, The Creator (Tyler Okonma) in his feature film debut.

Awards Buzz and Critical Acclaim

The film had a “secret” world premiere at the New York Film Festival in October 2025 and has since been named one of the Top Ten Films of 2025 by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

Critics are already hailing Chalamet’s performance as “career-defining,” with many speculating he is the frontrunner for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards. Drescher’s role is also being praised for providing a grounded, emotional weight to the otherwise fast-paced and stylistically chaotic world Josh Safdie is known for creating.

Release Date: A Christmas Day Smash

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see the “table tennis movie making headlines.” Marty Supreme is scheduled for a wide theatrical release by A24 on December 25, 2025.

Drescher concluded her GMA segment by encouraging audiences to see the film on the biggest screen possible. “It’s a New York story, it’s a family story, and it’s a wild ride you won’t want to miss.”
