The United Cajun Navy – the grass-roots volunteer emergency response organisation assisting with the search, along with multiple law enforcement agencies – declared the rescue mission over.
Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officials await DNA testing, but Jackson County authorities stated early evidence strongly suggests the remains are those of the missing Southwest Mississippi Community College athlete.

“His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” Wonsley wrote.
“My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul; God took his time creating our son. He was expected to return to campus for fall practice next month.

We remember Nolan as a well-respected young man who was very popular among friends, faculty, and staff. We loved Nolan, and he will be greatly missed in many ways.” Ongoing Investigation and Fraud Warning: The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department urged boaters and fishermen on Horn Island over the weekend to contact the agency with any photos or videos of Wells.
Wonsley also warned the public about a scam operating online: Several bogus fundraising pages have appeared, claiming to raise money for Wells’ family.
