The world’s most famous glowing orb is expanding its orbit. Sphere Entertainment Co. announced on January 18, 2026, that it has reached an agreement to build a second U.S. location at National Harbor in Maryland. Located just 15 minutes from the heart of Washington, D.C., the project marks a significant milestone as the first “smaller-scale” version of the revolutionary venue design.

While the original Las Vegas Sphere stands as a massive 18,600-seat titan, the National Harbor venue is designed to be a more intimate, 6,000-seat immersive theater. Despite its smaller footprint, officials promise that the “Mini-Sphere” will deliver the same jaw-dropping technology that has made the Vegas landmark a global sensation.

A Cutting-Edge Landmark at National Harbor

The project is a collaborative effort between Sphere Entertainment, the State of Maryland, Prince George’s County, and Peterson Companies. By choosing National Harbor—a premier tourism destination that already attracts 15 million visitors annually—the developers aim to create a permanent landmark on the Potomac River.

Key Features of the National Harbor Sphere:

  • 6,000-Seat Capacity: Roughly one-third the size of the Las Vegas original, allowing for more intimate concerts and corporate events.
  • The Exosphere: A massive exterior LED display that will showcase artistic content and branding to the millions who travel through the D.C. metro area.
  • 16K x 16K Interior Screen: The world’s highest-resolution LED display plane will wrap around the audience inside.
  • Advanced Sensory Tech: The venue will include Sphere Immersive Sound, haptic seating that vibrates with the action, and 4D environmental effects like wind and scent.

Economic Impact and Funding

The project is one of the largest economic development initiatives in the history of Prince George’s County. To bring this vision to life, the deal includes a mix of public and private funding, featuring approximately $200 million in incentives from state, local, and private sources.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has championed the project as a way to diversify the state’s economy. Projections suggest the Sphere will:

  • Support 2,500 jobs during the construction phase.
  • Create 4,750 permanent jobs once the doors open.
  • Generate an estimated $1 billion in annual economic impact for the region.

“Our focus has always been on creating a global network of Spheres across forward-looking cities. Sphere is a new experiential medium… Governor Moore and local leaders recognize the potential for a Sphere at National Harbor to elevate immersive experiences across the area.” — James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO, Sphere Entertainment.

What’s Next for the “Mini-Sphere”?

The National Harbor location is intended to be the blueprint for a global rollout of smaller venues. While a full-sized Sphere is currently under development in Abu Dhabi, this Maryland project proves that the Sphere concept is modular.

Construction is expected to be faster and more cost-effective than the $2.3 billion Vegas site, with an estimated opening target around 2030. For residents of the DMV (District, Maryland, Virginia), the arrival of the Sphere represents a massive win for local entertainment, positioning the region as a global hub for the next generation of digital storytelling.
